Puhekaraokeilta 11.4.2014
Galleria Värinä klo 18-21
Valtakatu 19 (2.kerros), Rovaniemi

Työpaja on avoinna non-stoppina.

The Speech Karaoke was presented in the exhibition »I am a socialist-anarchist-individual-collectivist-individualist-communist-cooperative-aristocrat-democrat«. Hämeenlinna (exhibition), 2010

Speech Karaoke Exhibition at Hämeenlinna Art Museum in Hämeenlinna, Finland, February 11 – May 9 2010

The Speech Karaoke was launched at Hämeenlinna Art Museum in the exhibition “I am a socialist-anarchist-individual-collectivist-individualist-communist-cooperative-aristocrat-democrat”. Hämeenlinna is a city and  municipality of about 67,000 inhabitants in the south of Finland, 98 km from Helsinki.

The Speech Karaoke was created collaboratively by artists Frank Maria Brümmel, Krister Gråhn, Tellervo Kalleinen, Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, Tuomas Laitinen, Carl Sebastian Lindberg, Pilvari Pirtola, Johanna Raekallio, Pasi Rauhala, Satu Rautiainen, Jyrki Riekki and Hanna Saarikoski . These artists also had their individual works presented in the same exhibition.

The artists of the exhibition wanted to see whether they can create an art work together, an artwork which would touch upon their shared topics of interests – such as the tension between an individual and a collective. Speech Karaoke was the product of several creative brainstormings of the group.

The speeches for the first version of Speech Karaoke were collected from a selection of intellectuals, politicians, activists and artists in Finland. They were invited to write a speech to the Speech Karaoke. The given topic for the speeches was that it should be that of an individual presenting a bigger ideology.

The Speech Karaoke was shown as a part of the exhibition. The audience of the exhibition were the ones using it.

Later on the artists continued developing the Speech Karaoke together under the name The Speech Karaoke Action Group.

about

Karaoke – spoken not sung!

Speech Karaoke – as the name suggests – works in a similar way as a traditional karaoke. Instead of choosing between songs from a booklet, the user chooses between speeches. Within a relaxed atmosphere one can listen to speeches delivered by other karaoke bar guests – or try out how it feels to interpret someone´s speech.

Speech Karaoke is a constantly expanding project by The Speech Karaoke Action Group. When the Speech Karaoke-project arrives to a new city, local speeches are added to the Karaoke archive.

The project was created in Finland, the promised land of karaoke bars.

Information for hosts:

Speech Karaoke can be shown as part of an exhibition, in which case the opening guests and later on the spectators of the exhibition are the ones using it. Another possibility is to make an one time event.

Please, load introduction pdf from here.

If you need press quality photos for marketing purposes for events, you can download them from here. Good manners please, if you use the images inform us by e-mail mail(at)speechkaraoke.org

Info for workshop participants:

The Speech Karaoke workshops are usually held one week before the speech karaoke bar evening. New karaoke videos are made based on the contributions of the workshop participants. Anyone can come to the workshop with a speech. In the workshop participants read karaoke versions of their own speeches. It can be a speech relevant to local history, but it can also be any other speech which has touched or provoked the participant – for example his / her own wedding speech! The Speech Karaoke Work Group helps the participants to design a karaoke video for the speech.

The highlight of the workshop process is of course the speech karaoke evening, which takes place after the local karaoke videos have been finalized and added to the system.

Behind the piece are the artists Frank Brümmel, Krister Gråhn, Tellervo Kalleinen, Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, Tuomas Aleksander Laitinen, Carl Sebastian Lindberg, Pilvari Pirtola, Johanna Raekallio, Satu Rautiainen, Pasi Rauhala, Jyrki Riekki, Hanna Saarikoski and Julius Valve.

The group does not represent one political/ideological conviction. Under the name The Speech Karaoke Action Group they collectively operate  this constantly expanding project.

The work was originally produced within the “I am a socialist-anarchist-individual-collectivist-individualist-communist-cooperative-aristocrat-democrat.” -exhibition project by The Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki. The project has been realized with the generous support of Finnish Cultural Foundation.
